Dog nail trimming and pet nail care in Indian Trail

How to tell it is overdue
Stand your dog square on a hard floor. If you can hear clicking as they walk, or you can slide a sheet of paper under the nail while the paw is flat, the nails are past due. Nails should clear the floor when the dog is standing still.
Clip or grind
Clippers are faster and better for thick nails. A grinder leaves a smoother edge that will not catch on carpet or scratch legs, and it gives more control on dark nails. Most dogs get clipped first and then smoothed with the grinder.
Black nails
You cannot see the quick through a dark nail, so guessing is how dogs get cut. We take small slices and watch the cut surface: it goes from chalky white to a grey oval, and that oval is the signal to stop. Slower, but it stays painless.
Dew claws and rear feet
Dew claws never touch the ground so they never wear down, and they are the ones that curl into the pad if they get skipped. Rear nails usually wear faster than front. We check all four feet plus dew claws every visit, including on a bath or full groom.
How often depends on the dog rather than the calendar. Dogs walked on Indian Trail sidewalks and greenway pavement wear their nails down and can stretch to six or eight weeks. Dogs that mostly run on grass in a fenced yard get almost no natural wear and usually need a trim every three to four weeks. If the quick has already grown out long, frequent light trims will let it recede over a few visits instead of trying to fix it in one go.
